The 10 Laws of Social Media Marketing

The 10 Laws of Social Media Marketing Did you know that 72% of adult Internet users use Facebook? Or did you know that Instagram photos showing faces get 38% more Likes than those not showing faces? I bet you didn’t know that 52% of Snapchat users are under 25 years old, 71% of Pinterest users are women and that only 25% of the 450 million LinkedIn users actively visit this social network every month (HubSpot). If you’re in business in the modern world, but at this point, you/your brand aren’t on any online social network, you are missing out on a type of connection with your target customers that the traditional approach to marketing can’t replace. Social media is the social niche between the world and your business. Online social networks have played a vital role in flourishing major businesses through customer engagement â€" even if the business is a mini local café or a tech start-up.Social media has provided not just a golden platform for success in order to voice out your ideas to millions of people around the globe, it also has a 100% higher lead-to-close rate than the outbound marketing. While tools such as SEO (Search Engine Optimization) have boosted up the ranks of various businesses in the market, many people have decided to target social mediums that can help them achieve their goals and thicken their wallets by maximizing the outreach of their websites. “SO, WHAT IS THIS SOCIAL MEDIA ALL ABOUT?”Simply put, social media are websites and smartphone applications that enable users to create and/or share content or to participate in social networking rapidly and efficiently across a diverse audience.Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Podcast, and Periscope are only a few famous examples of social media transforming itself from social networking tools to magnets that attract clients to retailers. If you’re new to social media, in order to harness the true power of it for your business you have to research it first! It’s very important to understand the core fundamentals of social media as well as to define what you want to get out of it. Ask yourself, is it:Significantly increasing your customer base,Maximizing your business profit,Improving your products’ quality by collecting customer feedback online, orAll of the above.Social media creates an image of your brand online and shows the impact of your brand on your a udience. While having millions of social media followers sounds cool, your ultimate goal is to make sure each one of them is actually creating an influence for your brand â€" by them sharing your content or not. TIPS FOR STARTING TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MARKETING PURPOSESTo achieve your end goals, you need to create a proper strategy or  plan. To do that, follow these tips:You can start off by identifying your ideal customers.Find out what social media channels they use the most. Then try to understand the language/jargon that they use in describing themselves as well as the words they use to search for brands that offer same or similar products/services as you do.It is also necessary to learn about the connections your competitors have with their followers.Decide which social media platform/s you will be using to connect with your target clients and what kind of content you will be sharing at which platform.Hence, it is crucial to know the pros and cons of each chosen platform as ea ch of them have its own scalability and efficiency.LOOKING INTO SOME SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING ACTIVITIESSome of the most common types of social media marketing functions include:Sharing quality content/hashtagsSchedule and publish regular tweets or posts with interesting and trending hashtags â€" this leads to increased followers’ base.Blog commentsIf there is a well-read blog in your industry and you comment on it, chances are that their followers will also see your comment and maybe connect with you as well. Some businesses prefer making pre-made comments or templates that they use on the influencer’s blogs. Blog commenting has been viewed as an important way of connecting with peers on various topics that would not be possible otherwise.Follow and connect with relevant influencersBusinesses that follow and interact with influencers online are likely to get comments by the very same influencer on their own published content. It is always wise to connect with people who share sim ilar interests as you and show great interests in product trends that are similar to the ones you offer. This opens the door to various new opportunities for collaborations and sharing your content with their own customer base.Because it’s oh, so very important to develop strong online brand awareness and nurture relationships with potential clients online, here are the 10 Laws of Social Media Marketing every online marketer should know and obey:1 â€" The Law of Empathetic ListeningSocial media is a two-way street. If you want great self-outreach, you must allow for the outreach of others too! Try to pick out sometimes going through online social media discussions in order to learn what is truly acceptable for your target audience. Success in this field desires greater listening and less expressing. Only in this way will you be able to produce sharp content and meaningful conversations that shall shine on your customers’ wish lists.Consider what type of content is the most popul ar and hits the hot trends at that specific time. Be sure to look also into what the people prefer or dislike. Embrace discussion forums, feedbacks, and you will be ready to go! 2 â€" The Law of One-point FocusIt is always wise to specialize. You cannot be the Jack-Of-All-Trades to people and neither can your social media status. You need to give the time to establish a focused and persistent brand message and marketing content through  social media platforms you prefer. If you fail to do so, this will fragment your purpose; confuse your consumers and water down your brand image. Note that a strong brand has a better chance of success than a branched strategy that fails to provide clear guidelines about the content it publishes and spreads.TIP: To operate according to your ideal customers and these ideal customers need to be identified by you and you alone. You can also get external help if you do not have the right skill set to work in a particular niche. Simply put aside your ego, and collect the right expertise.3 â€" The Law of Prioritizing QualityThis law focuses on expanding your list of dedicated and committed followers and neglecting those who share no enthusiasm for the establishment of your brand. It is always better to have a pool of 1000 followers who are truly interested in your brand/message and give your content the read and shares rather than 100,000 followers who hardly demonstrate any interest to your cause. So, you should focus on building up those die-hard followers, and do what you can to provide quality online content and quality product to them. Remember that quality dominates quantity!  You should also keep in mind that one perfectly written article is better than hundred articles that are not. All it takes is your effort in increasing the quality of your content and that is done by spending quality time on each article so that better results can be ensured. If you think that content quality is a major issue for you, do not hesitate to ge t some external aid.4 â€" The Law of PatienceIf you think that social media marketing is merely an overnight success, then you are wrong! You need to exercise patience. Social media marketing demands time in getting high-quality results â€" it’s not achieved in a week or two. In a world with so much competitiveness, the time investment is crucial.Consider the scenario where you have an upcoming Math exam. It is obvious that you will get a better grade if you spend more time practicing Math. You can’t simply expect to get an A grade just by opening your textbook one night before the exam and going through the formulas at the speed of light! The point I am trying to make here is that you have to be patient and consistent if you are doing what’s needed to get the results you desire. Many brands often give up after a few weeks of work as they see the slow progress as something negative in terms of online success. This is where they go wrong. Never give up!5 â€" The Law of Compoundi ngThis is perhaps the most important law. When you provide your customers with good quality content, they tend to share and discuss it on large-scale social networks such as Facebook or Twitter. This sharing, in turn, raises your business ranks, especially on Google. So be sure to provide interesting social media content. This will have a compounding effect on your efforts, as it will reach out to a huge pool of people interested in your brand.A person who likes your Facebook content might also tweet about it on Twitter. Or maybe a person who subscribes to your YouTube channel might also recommend your channel to his/her friends who will also subscribe to it. This, in turn, creates more locations where more people can find your content.  6 â€" The Law of InfluenceThis law states that it is important to build up good terms with online influencers who already have a successful pool of customers and followers. If you end up on their interest list, they might share your content with the ir massive following who might be interested in your product or services as well.So seek out the top scorers for your game. Share or promote their content and make it your aim to reach out to their audiences and form strong long-term bonds. Remember that there is always some community out there that will be interested in what you’re selling!7 â€" The Law of Adding Value to VoiceIf you are excessively promoting your business, your followers will eventually get annoyed and irritated so they will ignore your messages and leave your followership. If you keep focusing on brand promotion all the time, then other areas of your business will suffer from lack of attention and time. A café near me had become one of the finest in my town. But, due to excessive promotions, their staff neglected to make their current food items better.Instead, they kept on increasing prices to cover the costs of their marketing. So this café did not last long and they had to shut it down with a great loss to the owner. Now you wouldn’t want the same for your business, right? Of course not! It’s the value that your customers get from your business and promotional activities that ultimately convinces them to stick to your brand. Furthermore, provide customers with incentives if they are loyal to your brand â€" such as free stuff or discounts on upcoming services or products. The more value you add, the more satisfied your customers will be.8 â€" The Law of AccessibilityYou must be regularly available and accessible to your clients! You must engage your audience constantly and participate in conversations with them. Never disappear after publishing your content. Realize that this two-way street concept never works out if you are not fully playing your part in the game. Note that social media users are fast in forgetting businesses that they feel are unresponsive or not accessible. So make it obvious that you’re always accessible and online for them. As they say, “Actions speak louder than words” â€" this can be applied here as well. Therefore, make sure that when you receive a message in the inbox of your brand page, you reply within 24 hours. It doesn’t look professional if you don’t!9 â€" The Law of Acknowledging EveryoneBe sure that if someone reaches out to you (personally), you must acknowledge him or her â€" never make the mistake of ignoring anyone. Give this more importance since they have taken out time to personally reach out to you.For example, every time someone shares even a single post of yours, be sure to say: “Thank you” as this small sentence can mean so much in the long run by creating a relationship with that user. So go ahead and transform your clients into loyal fans by simply acknowledging their contributions.Your social media relationships work in a similar fashion to your physical ones. In both cases, the other person is expecting a welcoming and comfortable environment in order to stay in touch with you for long. They are look ing for people who would value their efforts as well â€" not the ones who would use them for their benefit and ditch them later.10 â€" The Law of Reciprocated EffortsFor huge brands to share your content with their massive followings, it is important to know that you’re also willing to do the same for them. This reciprocity plays a vital role in maximizing your social media efforts in reaching a greater audience. So, if you are not willing to reciprocate, you will have your content banned from the interest lists of all the other potential influencers! Don’t be self-centered and work your way up on the social media ladder to achieve great success! This law has always been one of the critical ones for providing you the edge that you need to stand out from millions of similar retailers out there. Be sure to be always ready to play an equal part in helping your allies, as if you don’t â€" you will find yourself standing in the battlefield along with many enemies who will aim to shr ink your business to the ground. The Internet is a battlefield and it’s one where you have to make a stand along with your potential allies.SO, WHATS THE BOTTOM LINE?While many businesses consider social media channels as significant means to achieve their goal, it’s only a few businesses that truly appreciate the vastness and integrity it provides in its ever-growing state.Always keep in mind that the path to a successful social media marketing game is a long road where you have to focus constantly on meeting your target customer’s hopes and expectations. Once you succeed in doing so, you shall notice considerable results. So stop wasting time, start tracking your progress by following your social media strategy, and keep redesigning it until your brand shines like a gold.

The Flight of Icarus Essay - 528 Words

The Flight of Icarus I find the most fascinating of ancient writings to be Greek mythology. Writings produced by the early Greeks, in my opinion, even rival modern day literature. Hard to believe considering everything the human race has experienced and endured up to this point. With so many Greek tragedies, my favorite has to be The Flight of Icarus. Our story begins on the isle of Crete. The earliest known settlers were the Minoans. King Minos ruled this island nation. This Greek tragedy involves an inventor named Daedalus. His homeland was Athens. For a short time, his apprentice was his sisters son Perdix. When Daedalus feared that Perdix would surpass him in talent, he murdered the boy by tossing him from the†¦show more content†¦Minos promised to sacrifice the bull as an offering, but he coveted it for himself. When Poseidon learned about the deceit, he made Minos wif e fall madly in love with the white bull. The offspring of their lovemaking was a monster called the Minotaur. The creature had the head and tail of a bull on the body of a man. It caused such terror and destruction on Crete that Minos himself summoned Daedalus. He ordered the architect to build a gigantic, intricate labyrinth from which escape would be impossible. The Minotaur was captured and locked in the labyrinth. Every year for nine years, seven youths and maidens came as a tribute from Athens. These young people were locked in the labyrinth for the Minotaur to feast upon. When the Greek hero Theseus reached Athens, he learned of the Minotaur and the sacrifices, and wanted to end this. He volunteered to go to Crete as one of the victims of the sacrifice. Upon his arrival in Crete, he met Ariadne, Minoss daughter, who fell in love with Theseus. She promised she would provide the means to escape from the maze if he agreed to marry her. The Process Of Hydraulic Fracturing - 1387 Words

Introduction: The process of hydraulic fracturing can be understood at different geographic scales such as the local, national and global. In order to better understand this process, the ways in which these scales influence hydraulic fracturing need to be deeply considered. The original purpose of hydraulic fracturing was to benefit the national and local economy plus environment of the United States, but due to the large interdependencies and networks of our world today, impacts at a global scale are inevitable. By analyzing each scale individually starting with national, local and ending with global, it will become clear that each scale is interdependent and interrelated with one another. Scales: In our fast-paced and globalizing†¦show more content†¦(Knox, 2010, p.11). Finally at the local scale, this can include human settlements such as community, home, and body (Knox, 2010, p.11). The local scale can be viewed as a mosaic, where the world is conceived as a collection of local peoples and places, each one being a piece in a broader global pattern (Crang, 2014, p. 11). Not only at a mosaic level does local and global connect, but also through a networking level where both local and global are made up of sets of connections and disconnections and can see local places as gaining their different characters through their distinctive patterns of association with other places (Crang, 2014, p. 18). For the specific case of hydraulic fracturing, it is more effective to view it through networks at the national, local, and global levels because a main factor of this resource is boosting the national economy of the United States by globally exporting the resource. Effective Healthcare Leadership

Question: Discuss about the Effective Healthcare Leadership. Answer: Introduction There is a relationship between the traits, motives and effectiveness of a good leader. All the three mentioned above must be inculcated for there to be good and effective leadership. The following are considered paramount traits in good leadership; Emotional stability is arguably the best trait for a leader to possess (Anderson, 2008). Emotional stability will include all the other traits that a leader is required to have. Good leaders are able to tolerate stress and frustrations in any organizational set up and this shows maturity. Dominance and enthusiasm A good leader is able to dominate others. This comes as a result of his influence on others as his contributions cannot be brushed aside. He should display enthusiasm and an approachable character to attract all and sundry. Social boldness and tough mindedness Timid people do not make good leaders as they dont attract a following. Good leadership requires courage and social boldness to build up influence on the people (Conant Norgaard, 2011). A good leader should also be mentally tough with the ability to tackle tough choices. Self-assurance and compulsiveness A good leader is self-reassuring. He has confidence in himself and his ability to lead. A good leader is able to be compulsive and self-driven. Day to day public examples of good leaders The world has had a lot of good leadership with traces of very bad leaders. In the course of twentieth century when the world was going through the second world war, good and bad leadership emerged (Nirenberg, 2002). This was evidenced through Winston Churchill of Britain. Along with president Roosevelt of the united states and Joseph Stalin of Italy made a pact to defeat the antagonist at the time who was Germanys Adolf hitler. The world war two was won by the allied forces bringing the world back to order. In the twenty first century, corporate leaders have emerged especially from the technological world. Apple founder Steve Jobs is one of many example. He transformed Apple to the most profitable, reputable and biggest company on earth. Others include Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and google founders. Leadership motives There are different motives for occupying a certain leadership position. Bad and good leaders are differentiated by their motives to occupy a position (Flemes, 2010). There are four main motives of a leader; they include; the power motive. This is usually a selfish and self-seeking motive. It drives the leader to seek self interest in the leadership position. An example in public domain is the rise of dictators like Idi Amin of Uganda and Hitler of Germany who were self-seeking Drive and achievement motive is based on a leaders need to achieve a certain goal. The leader has a self-drive to go for a certain achievement (Giuliani Kurson, 2002). An example includes leaders like Winston Churchill and Roosevelt when they teamed up to defeat Hitler during the Second World War. Other motives include the tenacity and a strong work ethics. Leadership effectiveness For an organization to have effective leadership, the leader should communicate clearly within the organization (Jasper Jumaa, 2005). The employees within an organization should be motivated in all aspects including financial all otherwise. A leader should be a risk taker, visionary and goal oriented. Many successful leaders in modern corporate world have this traits, they include, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and warren Buffet of Hathaway among others. Leadership traits and roles All these questions have been answered, in one way or another, but always theoretically. The real truth is that you can get very close, but these theories do not pass that, theories. In a series of posts, we will analyze each of these theories of leadership Research conducted developed a list of features, but the contrary. By understanding that it was not possible to find some features that might be set clearly, who could be a good leader, they tried to establish what were the traits related to failure, affecting the success negatively. Overall, the features that make the difference between those in positions of responsibility, and those who do not, are as follows: Intelligence and education. All authors found a significant relationship between intelligence possessed a person, and your chances of success (Nirenberg, 2002). Ultimately, they agreed that a minimum level of intelligence is needed to succeed. The educational level of the person was also closely related to the success achieved. Leadership, decision-making and prioritization Leaders know, almost instinctively, in whom they can trust by creating a strong and cohesive team and delegating certain tasks to them. However, he knows what he does; he identifies a competent person in your field. A leader also undertakes any task personally. Effective leadership An effective leader must be the first to step forward when the team take the lead if present difficult times, when all remain on the lookout (Schyns Meindl, 2005). A good leader must love the responsibility, must be willing to risk, and of course, should be able to maintain that illusion throughout the entire process must be tenacious and firm in his vision. To do this, the leader must be a person with a high degree of confidence in his vision, and in itself. The leader is able to determine with some accuracy if your group is ready for change, or if they will be resistant to this. However, you should be able to motivate your team, communicating your vision, with enough passion. You should be able to gain the trust of the people around him (Flemes, 2010). For this, you must be able to understand the motivations, and needs of his followers. Thanks to this, a person with these traits should be able to positively influence the people around them, and therefore their motivations are alig ned with the objectives set. Need for achievement There is need to present results, based on leadership traits and behaviors. A leader is measured by how successful he is. If necessary, a good leader must be able to change the course of the team fast enough, so that the decisions are effective. Understand that your vision may not withstand long contact with reality and must therefore change, and accept to be adapted to achieve your goal. Leadership theories Great man theory and participative theory Due to the broad content involved in leadership, various theories have been developed to support every leadership trait and behavior. The great man theory in leadership shows a leader who is idolized and is nearly worshiped by his subjects. The great man theory is the equivalent to tyrant or dictatorial leadership in an organization (Tracy, 2014). The second theory is the participative leadership theory. In this theory, the leader encourages group participation in decision making. This is an all-inclusive leadership style but may have certain limitation. Trait theory and behavioral theory Trait theory in leadership focuses more on the trait of a leader and the quality of the trait. Behavioral theory on leadership on the other hand focuses on the behavior of the leader. In these theories, various leadership styles emerge like the autocratic and the democratic styles of leadership (Winkler, 2010). Current and projected issues impacting on organizational leadership and success Due to current global changes, many factors affect organizational leadership, they include; Knowledge- many people have acquired knowledge that is crucial in organizational leadership. In fact, the current trend for career and leadership growth is accumulation of academic papers. It should be noted that, the higher the education the more likely one is to get a leadership position. Organizational culture- with different organizational cultures, ethnic backgrounds, ideologies and religion leadership is greatly affected. A good organizational culture positively affects organizational leadership (Rondinelli Heffron, 2009). Globalization- the emergence of multinational companies and need to expand has greatly influenced organizational leadership and success. Globalization in leadership has led to growth of new leders with tenacity and athick skin to handle global issues. This has impacted on organizational leadership and success positively. Innovation and globalization- the world has become a global village. Organization have become more global with innovation enhancing this dynamics,. This has also impacted on organizational leadership and success positively. If necessary, a good leader must be able to change the course of the team fast enough, so that this decision is effective. Communication- a good communicator always gets his way in any situation.communication strategies are effective way to influence organizational cultures and beliefs and in its entirety the leadership of nay organization. Many organizational leadership believe that the flow of communication should be top-down, where communication should flow from the top most managerial position to the bottom of the pyramid like the intern. However, based on the strategies involved, the top down communication show many characteristics of a dictatorial or a tyrannical leadership model. The best and effective communication strategy for an organizational success and leadership is the bottom up strategy. This is where a two way communication strategy is involved. Any decision is made by employees but major decisions are made by the top management. Conclusion Leadership is crucial for survival and success of any organization. Effective organizational strategy in leadership will have a positive impact on the business (Winkler, 2010). A good leader is effective, has positive character traits and is a great motivator. In fact, the current trend for career and leadership growth is accumulation of academic papers. It should be noted that, the higher the education the more likely one is to get a leadership position. Taoism And Buddism Essay Example For Students

Taoism And Buddism Essay Taoism and Buddhism are the two great philosophical and religious traditions that originated in China. Taoism began the sixth century BCE. And Buddhism came to China from India around the second century of the Common Era. These two religions have shaped Chinese life and thought for nearly twenty-five hundred years. One dominant concept in Taoism and Buddhism is the belief in some form of reincarnation. The idea that life does not end when one die is an integral part of these religions and the culture of the Chinese people. Reincarnations, life after death, and beliefs are not standardized. Each religion has a different way of applying this concept to its beliefs. This paper will discuss the reincarnation concepts as they apply to Taoism and Buddhism, and then provide a comparison of both. TaoismThe goal in Taoism is to achieve Tao, to find ?the Way?. Tao is the ultimate reality, a presence that existed before the universe was formed and which continues to guide the world and everythi ng in it. Tao is sometimes identified as ?the Mother?, or the source of all things. That source is not a god or a Supreme Being, as Taoism is not monotheistic. The focus is not to worship one god, but instead to come into harmony with Tao. Tao is the essence of everything that is right, and complications exist only because people choose to complicate their own lives. Desire, ambition, fame, and selfishness are seen as hindrances to a harmonious life. One can only achieve Tao if he rids himself of all desires. By shunning every earthly distraction, the Taoist is able to concentrate on the self. The longer the persons life, the more saintly the person is presumed to become. Eventually the hope is to become immortal, to achieve Tao, to reach the deeper life. This is the after life for a Taoist, to be in harmony with the universe, and to have achieved Tao. The origin of the word Tao can explain the relationship between life, and the Taoism concept of life and death. The Chinese characte r for Tao is a combination of two characters that represent the words as head and foot. The character for foot represents the idea of a persons direction or path. The character for head represents the idea of conscious choice. The character for head also suggests a beginning, and foot, an ending. Thus the character for Tao also conveys the continuing course of the universe, the circle of heaven and earth. Finally, the character for Tao represents the Taoist idea that the eternal Tao is both moving and unmoving. The head in the character means the beginning, the source of all things, or Tao itself, which never moves or changes; the foot is the movement on the path. Taoism upholds the belief in the survival of the spirit after death. Taoist believes birth is not a beginning, and death is not an end. There is an existence without limit. There is continuity without a starting point. Applying reincarnation theory to Taoism is the belief that the soul never dies, a persons soul is eternal . In the writings of the Lao-Tzu Te-Tao Ching, Tao is described as having existed before heaven and earth. Tao is formless, it stands alone without change and reaches everywhere without harm. The Taoist is told to use the light that is inside to revert to the natural clearness of sight. By divesting oneself of all external distractions and desires, only then can one achieve Tao. In ancient days a Taoist that had transcended birth and death, achieved Tao, was said to have cut the Thread of Life. In Taoism, the soul or spirit does not die at death. The soul is not reborn, it simply migrates to another life. This process, the Taoist version of reincarnation, is repeated until Tao is achieved. The following translation from the Lao-Tzu Te-Tao Ching summarizes the theory behind Tao and how a Taoist can achieve Tao. The Great Tao flows everywhere. It may go left or right. All things depend on it for life, and it does not turn away from them. It accomplishes its task, but dies not claim cr edit for it. It clothes and feeds all things but does not claim to be master over them. Always without desires, it may be called the Small. All things come to it and it does not master them; it may be called the Great. Therefore (the sage) never strives himself for the great, and thereby the great is achieved. The eternal hope for all followers of Buddha is that through reincarnation one comes back into successively better lives until one achieves the goal of being free from pain and suffering and not having to come back again. This wheel of rebirth, known as Samsara, goes on forever until one achieves Nirvana. The Buddhist definition of Nirvana is the highest state of spiritual bliss, as absolute immortality through absorption of the soul into itself, but preserving individuality. Birth is not the beginning and death is not the end. This cycle of life has no beginning and can go on forever without an end. The ultimate goal for every Buddhist, Nirvana, is to accomplish total enlightenment and liberation. By achieving this goal, one can be liberated from the never ending round of birth, death, and rebirth. Transmigration, the Buddhist cycle of birth, death, an d rebirth, does not involve the reincarnation of a spirit, but only the rebirth of a consciousness containing the seeds of good and evil deeds. Buddhisms world of transmigration encompasses three stages. The first stage concerns with desire, which goes against the teachings of Buddha. It is the lowest form and involves a rebirth into hell. The second stage is one in which animals dominate. But after many reincarnations in this stage the spirit becomes more and more human, until one attains a deeper spiritual understanding. At this point the Buddhist gradually begins to abandon materialism and seek a contemplative life. In the third stage, the Buddhist is able to put his ego to the side and become pure spirit, having no perception of the material world. This stage requires one to move from perception to non-perception. And so, through many stages of spiritual evolution and numerous reincarnations, the Buddhist reaches the state of Nirvana. The transition from one stage to another, or the progression within a stage is based on the actions of the Buddhist. All actions are simply the display of thought, the will of man. This is caused by the persons character, and character is manufactured from karma. Karma means action or doing. Any kind of intentional action, such as mental, verbal or physical action, is regarded as karma. All good and bad actions constitute karma. A persons karma determines what he deserves and what goals can be achieved. What the Buddhist does in his past life determines his present standing in life and that determines his next life. .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 , .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .postImageUrl , .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 , .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86:hover , .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86:visited , .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86:active { border:0!important; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86:active , .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86 .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue691eaceb4f20beab3370834789d6c86:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Biography: During his few weeks as Vice President, EssayBuddha developed a doctrine known as the Four Noble Truths based on his experience and inspiration about the nature of life. These truths are the basis for all schools of Buddhism. The fourth truth describes the way to overcome personal desire through the Eightfold Path. Buddha called his path the Middle Way, because it lies between a life of luxury and a life of poverty. Not everyone can reach the goal of Nirvana, but every Buddhist is at least on the path toward enlightenment. To achieve Nirvana the Buddhist must follow the steps of the Eightfold Path. Step 1: ?Right Understanding? is knowledge of what life is all a bout; knowledge of the Four Noble Truths is basic to any further growth as a Buddhist. It includes the true understanding of ourselves, of our real motives, of our hopes and fears, envies and hatreds. Step 2: ?Right Thought? is those thoughts that are free from lust, form ill-will, and from cruelty. It means a clear devotion to being on the Path toward Enlightenment. Step 3: ?Right Speech? involves both clarity of what is said and speaking kindly and without malice. It avoids harsh language and foolish talk. It is the speech which is true, kind, efficacious and to the point. Step 4: ?Right Action? involves reflecting on ones behavior and the reasons for it. It also involves five basic laws of actions for Buddhists: not to kill, steal, lie, drink intoxicants, or commit sexual offenses. ?Kill not, for pity-sake, and lest ye stay The meanest thing upon its upward way. Give freely and receive, but take from none By greed, or force, or fraud, what is his own. Bear not false witness, slander not, nor lie;Truth is the speech of inward purity. Shun drugs and drink which work the wit abuse; Clear minds, clean bodies need no Soma Juice. Touch not thy neighbors wife, neither commit Sins of the flesh, unlawful and unfit.? ? (Light of Asia) Step 5: ?Right Livelihood? involves choosing an occupation that keeps an individual on the Path; that is, a path that promotes life and well being, rather than the accumulation of a lot of money. It would exclude the professions of soldier, fisherman, hunter, or any profession that kills, harms or promotes the hurting of any living being. Step 6: ?Right Effort? is the effort to avoid wrong conditioning factors. It means training the will and curbing selfish passions and wants. It also means placing oneself along the Path toward Enlightenment. Step 7: ?Right Mindfulness? implies continuing self-examination and awareness. ?Irrigators lead the waters;Fletchers fashion the shafts;Carpenters bend the wood; The wise control themselves. When a wise man, established well in virtue,Develops consciousness (mindfulness) and understanding,Then?ardent and sagaciousHe succeeds in disentangling this tangle.? ?(Samyutta-Nikaya 1, 13) Step 8: ?Right Concentration? is the final goal to be absorbed into a state of Nirvana. It is the kind of mental concentration which is presented in every wholesome state of consciousness, and hence is accompanied by at least Right Thought, Right Effort and Right Mindfulness. Compliance to the path does not guarantee reaching Nirvana, but it is the only path that leads to Nirvana. Only by following this path, a Buddhist could have a chance to reach enlightenment, to free oneself from the continuous rounds of birth, death and rebirth, to have reached the ultimate goal to be absorbed into a state of Nirvana. Comparison of Taoism and BuddhismThe purpose in both Taoism and Buddhism is to reach the ultimate goal, to transcend life on earth as a physical being, and to achieve harmony with nature and the universe. The ultimate goal for both religions is to achieve immortality. The Taoist called this ultimate goal Tao, while the Buddhist seeks Nirvana. The followers of both religions believe there is an existence beyond life that can be achieved following the right path or behavior. .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 , .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .postImageUrl , .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 , .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5:hover , .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5:visited , .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5:active { border:0!important; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5:active , .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5 .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1fa6d7c0e8b38591c8bfd07ba00244f5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Laws Against Assisted Suicide in Canada EssayThe path to Tao and Nirvana are similar, yet different. Both believe that there is an Inner Light, which guides a person in the right direction to the ultimate goal. Personal desires must be forsaken in order for the Inner Light to guide a person to achieve eternal bliss. The teaching regarding the Inner Light is just as prominent in the Taoist schools as it is among the practices of Buddhism. The Inner Light concept is similar, but the actual path is different between Taoism and Buddhism. The path toward enlightenment for the Buddhist was defined by Buddha in his Eightfold Path. The Buddhist can only reach Nirvana by following this path. On the other hand, the path to Tao is individual, it comes from within. No one can define a path for the Taoist, it must come from the Inner Light. Tao means Way, but in the original and succeeding manuscripts no direct path is explored or expounded. Desire, ambition, fame, and selfishness are seen as complications. That idea is consistent with Buddhist teachings; it is the personal life of each individual that gives Taoism its special form. Taoism and Buddhism perceive life, death and rebirth as a continuous cycle. This cycle has no beginning and no end. The soul is eternal, yet the soul is not the object of reincarnation. Taoist believes the soul is not reborn, it migrates to another life. Buddhist also believes the soul is not reborn, but instead a consciousness containing the seeds of good and evil deeds is the object of rebirth. One major difference between Taoism and Buddhism is the concept of karma. Karma refers to the idea that actions are the display of thought, the will of man. Karma determines the Buddhist actions and position in life. A persons karma limits the goals that he can achieve. Karma determines where in the cycle of birth, death and rebirth the consciousness returns. This return can be in the form of an animal or human, and the Buddhist must progress through a hierarchy to achieve Nirvana. The Taoist has no concept similar to karma, and Taoism does not mention the soul migrating to an animal form. The determining factor to ones life is contained in the individual behavior for the Taoist. By forsaking personal desires in life, and by focusing on the self, one can live longer. Eventually, by following the Inner Light, immortality can be achieved. The similarities between Taoism and Buddhism in the belief of life after death far outweigh the differences. Both religions believe the individual mu st focus on the self to achieve the ultimate goal. To focus on oneself, all desires and personal ambitions must be forsaken. One must focus on the self and the proper way of life to reach immortality. The cycle of life continues indefinitely until the Thread of Life is broken. Only through proper living, and by following the correct path guided by the Inner Light, can one achieve the ultimate goal of Tao or Nirvana. BibliographyRobert G. Henricks, ?Lao-Tzu Te-Tao Ching ? Admiral Togo Heihachiro in the Russo-Japanese War

Admiral Togo Heihachiro in the Russo-Japanese War Early Life Career of Togo Heihachiro: The son of a samurai, Togo Heihachiro was born in Kagoshima, Japan on January 27, 1848. Raised in the citys Kachiyacho district, Togo had three brothers and was educated locally. After a relatively peaceful childhood, Togo first saw military service at age fifteen when he participated in the Anglo-Satsuma War. The result of the Namamugi Incident and the murder of Charles Lennox Richardson, the brief conflict saw ships of the British Royal Navy bombard Kagoshima in August 1863. In the wake of the attack, the daimyo (lord) of Satsuma established a navy in 1864. With the creation of a fleet, Togo and two of his brothers quickly enlisted in the new navy. In January 1868, Togo was assigned to the side-wheeler Kasuga as a gunner and third-class officer. That same month, the Boshin War between supporters of the emperor and the forces of the shogunate commenced. Siding with the Imperial cause, the Satsuma navy quickly became engaged and Togo first saw action at the Battle of Awa on January 28. Remaining aboard Kasuga, Togo also took part in naval battles at Miyako and Hakodate. Following the Imperial triumph in the war, Togo was selected to study naval matters in Britain. Togo Studies Abroad: Departing for Britain in 1871 with several other young Japanese officers, Togo arrived in London where he received English language training and instruction in European customs and decorum. Detailed as a cadet to the training ship HMS Worcester at the Thames Naval College in 1872, Togo proved a gifted student who frequently engaged in fisticuffs when called Johnny Chinaman by his classmates. Graduating second in his class, he embarked as an ordinary seaman on the training ship HMS Hampshire in 1875, and circumnavigated the globe. During the voyage, Togo fell ill and his eyesight began to fail. Subjecting himself to a variety of treatments, some painful, he impressed his shipmates with his endurance and lack of complaint. Returning to London, doctors were able to save his eyesight and he began a study of mathematics with Reverend A.S. Capel in Cambridge. After traveling to Portsmouth for further schooling he then entering the Royal Naval College at Greenwich. During the course of his studies he was able to watch firsthand the construction of several Japanese warships in British shipyards. Conflicts at Home: Away during the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion, he missed the turmoil that it brought to his home region. Promoted to lieutenant on May 22, 1878, Togo returned home aboard the armored corvette Hiei (17) which had recently been completed in a British yard. Arriving in Japan, he was given command of Daini Teibo. Moving to Amagi, he closely watched Admiral Amà ©dà ©e Courbets French fleet during the 1884-1885 Franco-Chinese War and went ashore to observe French ground forces on Formosa. After rising to the rank of captain, Togo again found himself on the front lines at the start of the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894. Commanding the cruiser Naniwa, Togo sank the British-owned, Chinese-chartered transport Kowshing at the Battle of Pungdo on July 25, 1894. While the sinking nearly caused a diplomatic incident with Britain, it was within the constraints of international law and showed Togo to be a master of understanding the difficult issues that could arise in the global arena. On September 17, he led Naniwa as part of the Japanese fleet at the Battle of the Yalu. The last ship in Admiral Tsuboi Kozos line of battle, Naniwa distinguished itself and Togo was promoted to rear admiral at the wars end in 1895. Togo in the Russo-Japanese War: With the conflicts end, Togos career began to slow and he moved through various appointments such as commandant of the Naval War College and commander of the Sasebo Naval College. In 1903, Navy Minister Yamamoto Gonnohyoe stunned the Imperial Navy by appointing Togo to the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet, making him the nations preeminent naval leader. This decision caught the attention of Emperor Meiji who questioned the ministers judgment. With the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, Togo took the fleet to sea and defeated a Russian force off Port Arthur on February 8. As Japanese ground forces laid siege to Port Arthur, Togo maintained a tight blockade offshore. With the citys fall in January 1905, Togos fleet conducted routine operations while awaiting the arrival of the Russian Baltic Fleet which was steaming to the war zone. Led by Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky, the Russians encountered Togos fleet near the Straits of Tsushima on May 27, 1905. In the resulting Battle of Tsushima, Togo utterly destroyed the Russian fleet and earned the nickname the Nelson of the East from the Western media. Later Life of Togo Heihachiro: With the wars conclusion in 1905, Togo was made a Member of the British Order of Merit by King Edward VII and acclaimed around the world. Departing his fleet command, he became Chief of the Naval General Staff and served on the Supreme War Council. In recognition of his achievements, Togo was elevated to hakushaku (count) in the Japanese peerage system. Given the honorific title of fleet admiral in 1913, he was appointed to oversee the education of Prince Hirohito the following year. Acting in this role for a decade, in 1926, Togo became the only non-royal to be given the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum. An ardent opponent of the 1930 London Naval Treaty, which saw Japanese naval power given a secondary role relative to the United States and Britain, Togo was further elevated to koshaku (marquis) by now-Emperor Hirohito on May 29, 1934. The following day Togo died at age 86. Internationally respected, Great Britain, the United States, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and China all sent warships to take part in a Tokyo Bay naval parade in the late admirals honor. Rewrite - Essay Example Even as the Communist Party declared the â€Å"one country, two systems† rule, most Hong Kong citizens predicted that mainland would not fulfill its promise of leaving Hong Kong’s existing government system intact. The Occupy Central movement, also known as the â€Å"Yellow Ribbon Revolution† or â€Å"Umbrella Revolution,† is a movement led by students to vie for genuine democracy in the city of Hong Kong. The movement claims that the Chinese Government cannot inhibit the intrinsic rights of humans, including freedom of speech and political representation in the government. Although the movement was initiated on the belief that more people should be aware of the current situation and Hong Kong people should fight for their own rights, Occupy Central nearly caused the whole city into violent uprising and a military takeover. Occupy Central was led by the Joint Committee of Students’ Unions of Hong Kong’s eight prominent universities. John Lo, the Administrative secretary of the Hong Kong University Students’ Union said that HKU students are the vanguards of political awareness in society (1). As students do not share as much of the burden to care for a family, they should stand in the forefront of this fight. The picture shows protesters with yellow ribbons to symbolize pro-democracy supporters (YoungPost 1). This fight for democracy is not only for the current generation, he said, but future generations. Secretary Lo participated in the movement by camping out in the street along with thousands of other protestors as a form of nonviolent civil disobedience. He and his cabinet also urged the HKU Union Council to issue a decree condemning the Communist Party and National Party Congress for passing laws that effectively prohibit Hong Kong from reaching universal suffrage at least until 2018. As of now, HKSAR’s government system is not in function. The imbalance of power among the three branches of government is obvious. The legislative branch is

Should Global Poverty be a U.S National Security Issue Essay

Should Global Poverty be a U.S National Security Issue - Essay Example This paper illustrates that global poverty is a phenomenon that has been in existence for quite a long time now. However, it is noteworthy that it is an aspect of global in equality. By this, I mean that, in most of the countries, there exists an exceptionally wide gap between the upper and the lower class. Some have no middle class at all. This is reflected in the wider picture with the developed countries having massive wealth, as opposed to the peanuts in the developing world. What does this imply? This is so dangerous to the mutual coexistence of these people. Mostly, global poverty has been continually ignored under the pretence that it is not a problematic issue but a social issue of specific countries. Realistically, this is an environmental problem. This is because, for such people in such circumstances, they have an effect to the environment. By this, I mean that, these difficult economic situations do force them to indulge in behaviors that are environmentally unsustainable . For instance, a country in Sub Saharan Africa will be more likely to engage in charcoal burning due to the financial constraints. This may be in an effort to look for money through its sale to sustain their troublesome life or to use it as firewood instead of the cleaner biogas. This in turn, has an effect on global climate by contributing to augmented discharge of green house gases into the atmosphere leading to global warming. Global warming, consequently results into so many disastrous effects. This includes drought, excessive rainfall and respiratory ailments. (Galore and Weil, p 810). This charcoal burning is also capable of directly affecting the environment because it results into soil degradation. Global poverty also turns out to be an environmental problem because, many people do not get to meet their basic needs (Galore and Weil, p 815). This in itself is an environmental crisis because it is the failure to construct a sustainable environment t for human life. The United States national security strategy demands of them to build a balance of power bearing in mind that each country, whether small or large, has its fundamental responsibilities. Moreover, to affect this, it resolves to pioneer aspirations of human self-respect (Galore and Weil, p 820). With the implications that global poverty has on the environment, it is high time that the United States recognize it as an environmental problem. Its effects on the security are also wanting. This is because; due to poverty such people do not get access to adequate education hence termed as the illiterate. With no employment that comes with no skills and little employment activities, it leaves a large room for indulgence in destructive activities. An excellent example is the poverty in the African American community of the United States (Galore and Weil, p 25). With no education that guarantees no education, it is no wonder that they participate in violent crimes. All these considered it will be of the essence if the United States considers entrenching global poverty into the national security Policy. It should thus be considered as United States National security issue. Population, Technology, and Growth This article explores the model through which population, technology and growth can be fitted to come up with a functional and economic legacy. With three regimes that have lived to characterize the economic development, it is essential that these steps be fairly understood. This will be beneficial to map out the possible transitions’ and have a clear understanding of what the future presents to the world in the economic sector. In a situation where the progress in technology is slow with a growing population, there is a likelihood of reduced rise in output growth (Sachs and Sewell, p 34). This means s that the high numbers of people consume more than what technology can provide them. This is because technology is meant to make man, s work easier. However, if this

Art Deco And Rene Lalique

Art Deco And Rene Lalique Art Deco, a popular international art design movement of the 1920s to 1940s influenced the decorative arts like architecture, interior design and industrial design along with visual arts such as fashion, paintings, the graphic arts and films. This style came across as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern in those times. The movement was a blend of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Art Deco was purely decorative, although many other design movement had political or philosophical roots or intentions. A decline in the popularity of Art Deco was seen in the late 30s and early 40s, but later in the 1980s revived with the popularization of graphic design. Art Deco had a profound influence on many later artistic movements, such as Memphis and Pop art. Linear decorative designs that were reminiscent of modern technology were characteristics of Art Deco, also known Art modern. In order to symbolize the expanse of the machine age, emphasizes was laid on long, thin forms, curved surfaces and geometric patterns. Although the movement was popular in the 1920s and 30s, the movement received its gained its name in the 1960s derived from the 1925 Paris expositions of decorative arts. Art Deco was a modernization of many diverse artistic styles and themes from the earlier period. It took inspiration from Far and Middle East design, Greek and Roman themes, and also Egyptian and Mayan influence. The movement emphasized abstraction, distortion, and simplification by use of geometric shapes and intense colours, it derived these characteristics from the avant-garde painting styles of the early twentieth century, including Cubism, Constructivism, and Italian Futurism. Art Deco is distinguished from Art nouveau and precisionist movement by a more modern look. Art Deco was influenced arts and architecture, primarily the decorative, industrial, and graphic arts. It was also a well-liked style in fashion, furniture, jewelry, and textiles. The most renowned Art Deco artist is glassmaker and jeweler, Rene Lalique. Two well-known U. S. buildings executed following the Art Deco approach include Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler Building. Art Deco, an opulent style, credits its lavishness to the reaction to the forced sternness imposed by World War I. Its rich, festive character fitted it in the modern contexts, including works such as the Golden Gate Bridge, interiors of cinema theaters and ocean liners such as the ÃŽle de France, Queen Mary, and Normandie. To reflect the modernity and efficiency of the train in the united states, Art Deco was employed extensively throughout the train stations in the 1930s. The most significant feature of Art Deco was its dependence upon ornaments and motifs alongside making use of many other distinctive styles. The style is said to have reflected the tensions in the cultural politics of its day, with eclecticism having been one of its defining features. As quoted by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the distinctive style of Art Deco was shaped by all the nervous energy stored up and expended in the War. The style that Art Deco employs is the description of eclecticism. It draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources and has its own unique look that is difficult to define. Its range of characteristics makes it an extremely versatile style, and an enjoyable one to work with, since Art Deco is easily integrated into a wide variety of personal styles making it liked by many and a favorite among collectors. Renà © Lalique 1860 1945 Rene Lalique, one of the few artists who successfully made the transition from the mannered, self-consciously opulent and sinuous Art nouveau(1800s-1900s) artistic culture to the sweeping modern elegant functionality of Art Deco (1910-1940), for which periods he is considered to be one of the worlds greatest glass artists and jewellery designers. His superb work features naturalistic elements inspired by nature, Greek classical themes, and social pursuits of his time such as hunting. Lalique in his work retained the handmade look while he also employed the most modern manufacturing techniques and equipment of his time to mass-produce his work. Museums and glass enthusiasts still collect his clear and frosted glass creations, which were also very popular during his lifetime. Early Years Jewellery Career Born on April 6, 1860 in the village of Aà ¿ in the Champagne region of France, Lalique family moved to Paris when he was two years-old. Beginning at age of 16, Lalique began to work as a trainee with Louis Aucoc, one of the best jewelers of Paris, while continuing his drawing classes at the Ecole des Arts Dà ©coratifs de Paris. He developed a unique naturalist style which was to influence his style as a jeweler while he studied drawing at Sydenham College in London. Lalique worked as a designer for a relative while freelancing on the side for jewelers such as Aucoc, Boucheron, Cartier, Destape, Gariod, Hamelin and Jacta, in Paris. He also studied sculpture modeling and etching. It all began in 1885; Lalique began manufacturing his jewellery designs out of his own workshop. For these he employed non-conventional materials such as translucent enamel, semiprecious stones and ivory. Success followed in 1893 when he won second prize in the Centrale des arts Dà ©coratifs goldsmiths competition for his Chardon glasses and an honourable mention for his Pampas and Satyrs vase. The following year, Lalique exhibited at the Salon de la Socià ©tà © des Artistes Franà §ais in the sculpture section and began creating jewellery for Sarah Bernhardt. Four years later, he won the Grand Prix at the International Exhibition in Brussels and was made a Chevalier de la Là ©gion dHonneur. In 1902, Lalique was living, manufacturing and showing out of his mansion in Paris, which featured his designs on the balconies, entrance and hall. By 1908, he had begun creating fashion accessories such as handbags, scarves and belts as well as perfume bottles for Franà §ois Coty. These bottle designs, which evoked the enclosed fragrance, revolutionized the perfume industry and led to work for other leading perfumers such as Roger Gallet, Houbigant, Molyneux, dOrsay, Molinard and Worth.

Global Forces of Change Essay

1. From the case facts, describe how globalization and technology have influenced the business directions of GE Medical Systems. Technology Since new requirements in healthcare business had been emerged, in the market it is required to implement personalized medicine to support specific client – not mass population. Moreover, trend on find the way to prevent sickness is more concerned than to heal. This is massive challenge to medical equipment manufacturers whether which company can find the best technology to support these requirements. GE believed that the best technology would always win in the marketplace so they responded to these requirements by investing more on R&D and also product design. As the result, corporate R&D invented some new products which replace need of existing product, for example, digital detectors for X-ray machines that would replace the need for X-ray film. Globalization Globalization increases connectivity and interdependence of the world’s markets and businesses. Emerging middle-classes of Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America is also an opportunity for healthcare company like GE to expand their markets, increase sales and profits. Beside of sales side, GE can also reduce their manufacturing cost by shifting manufacturing from high-cost countries to low-cost countries. This would increase their competitive advantage. 2. Identify possible projects by which a company dealing in Healthcare and Medical Diagnosis like GEMS can profitably ride the waves of globalization, liberalization and technology. * Shifting manufacturing base from high-cost countries to low-cost countries in order to reduce production cost. * To develop healthcare IT system, this is to manage necessary data systematically such as patient data, treatment record etc. This is also helpful for diagnosis. * To apply Free Trade Agreement with emerging countries in order to facilitate access of healthcare products. * Even general needs of customers in healthcare in each country is same but there are some specific requirements which are required individually so GEMS should not neglect R&D in each local market. Hiring local staffs is an effective alternative since local people might understand needs in their society well. * R&D is vital since technology changes every day. GEMS should keep investing on find out the way to increase effective ness of their equipment and also invent new products which can replace existing one. 3. Describe the world do you envision in 2050, especially with China and India likely to take center-stage? Touch on the economic, political, social and cultural adaptation that you think can take place. According to many reports show that over the next 50 years China and then India’s economies will overtake US. Large and growing market opportunities in China and India are widely seen and understood as evidenced by the large flows of foreign direct investment to China, both for the domestic market, but also to use China as a low cost platform for exports to the rest of the World. China is communist. Due to their political characteristics, control in a repressive way substantial part of the economy, especially the financial sector that brought about massive imbalance. A centralized decision-making process, although discretionary would presumably ease political action by by-passing all types of necessary approvals from a parliament or congress in a democratic system. So changing of Chinese government would possibly change the world. About social and culture, as foreign companies would base their manufacturing in China, learning local culture would be very important in order to have smooth operation and avoid any conflict. China language will become as vital as English. On the other hands, due to growing of China economic dominance, Chinese people will also spread over the world. Their culture will unavoidably absorb to everywhere. We have no choice but adapt with it.

Fall of Icarus Poems

After reading Landscape With The Fall of Icarus by William Carlos Williams and Musee Des Beaux Arts by W. H. Auden, a clear idea is present. Both authors seem to minimize the importance of Icarus’s death, but with what intent? In both poems, self-concern outweighs any intentions to help Icarus. It is clear to me what the authors were trying to express by implying that people simply had their own things to do, too used to disaster to even care about anyone besides themselves. In the Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus, Williams makes it clear that people are too concerned with themselves to notice anything happening around them. That idea started to become present when Williams wrote â€Å"the edge of the sea concerned with itself†. This quote demonstrates how everyone only cared about what they were doing. The message was very clear to me when the poem said â€Å"insignificantly off the coast there was a splash quite unnoticed this was Icarus drowning†.The way Willi ams used the word â€Å"insignificantly† while describing Icarus’s fall made me think that he wanted to give the impression that Icarus’s fall was not important to anyone and it was just another daily tragedy. In the Musee des Beaux Arts by W. H. Auden, the message Auden was trying to give seems to jump out of the page. For example, a quote from the poem says â€Å"how everything turns away Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may Have heard the Splash, the forsaken cry, But for him it was not an important failure†.This quote clearly shows how people can so easily turn from disaster without a second thought. And even though someone may have heard the splash and the cry, it was not an â€Å"important failure† to them because he was not affected. I think Auden meant the reason for people’s selfishness, when it comes to disaster, to be from how used they were to tragedy. If disaster is an often occurrence, it’s harder to be a s affected from it. The first lines of Musee de Beaux Arts are â€Å"About suffering they were never wrong, The old Masters: how well they understood Its human position: how it takes place†.This beginning to the poem demonstrates that same idea: that people are accepting of suffering. People understood its human position; they understood how it takes place. This is why I think Auden made Icarus’s death seem unimportant, simply because people were so used to it. Also, the last lines of Auden’s poem were â€Å"the expensive delicate ship that must have seen Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky, Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on. This quote from the text seems to give a clear answer to why Icarus’s death seemed so unimportant; it was simply because people were too caught up in their own business to care for each other’s. As you can see, Icarus’s death in the poems Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus and Musee des Beaux Arts seemed very unimportant. By reading the poems carefully, you can see the two author’s meaning behind this, which was that people were too concerned with themselves to care.

The Conviction Of Christian Parents - 784 Words

EDU 540 Lesson 1B The conviction of Christian parents who wanted to provide their children with the Bible-based moral education in a pagan Roman society was a driving force behind the Christian school education that emerged in the early centuries. When Christians were dispersed throughout the Roman Empire after the destruction of Jerusalem, Christian parents - both Jewish and Gentile- faced a dilemma for their children s education. The Jewish people had a long history of their commitment to the spiritual education of their children. They were the first to establish church-supported religious school system when they exiled to Babylon and started to building synagogues and schools either inside of next to the synagogues. All instructions, either at home or school, were given based on the first five books of the Bible. Gentile Christians also wanted the Bible-based moral education for their children. Christian parents who strongly opposed to the subjects which were filled with immorality and mythology taught in the pagan schools all throughout the Roman Empire had to find an alternative to educating their children. The pagan schools at the time were ultimately influenced by Greek and Roman educational philosophies and objectives.
