The Flight of Icarus Essay - 528 Words

The Flight of Icarus I find the most fascinating of ancient writings to be Greek mythology. Writings produced by the early Greeks, in my opinion, even rival modern day literature. Hard to believe considering everything the human race has experienced and endured up to this point. With so many Greek tragedies, my favorite has to be The Flight of Icarus. Our story begins on the isle of Crete. The earliest known settlers were the Minoans. King Minos ruled this island nation. This Greek tragedy involves an inventor named Daedalus. His homeland was Athens. For a short time, his apprentice was his sisters son Perdix. When Daedalus feared that Perdix would surpass him in talent, he murdered the boy by tossing him from the†¦show more content†¦Minos promised to sacrifice the bull as an offering, but he coveted it for himself. He assumed that Poseidon would not mind, so he kept it and sacrificed the best specimen from his herd instead. When Poseidon learned about the deceit, he made Minos wif e fall madly in love with the white bull. The offspring of their lovemaking was a monster called the Minotaur. The creature had the head and tail of a bull on the body of a man. It caused such terror and destruction on Crete that Minos himself summoned Daedalus. He ordered the architect to build a gigantic, intricate labyrinth from which escape would be impossible. The Minotaur was captured and locked in the labyrinth. Every year for nine years, seven youths and maidens came as a tribute from Athens. These young people were locked in the labyrinth for the Minotaur to feast upon. When the Greek hero Theseus reached Athens, he learned of the Minotaur and the sacrifices, and wanted to end this. He volunteered to go to Crete as one of the victims of the sacrifice. Upon his arrival in Crete, he met Ariadne, Minoss daughter, who fell in love with Theseus. She promised she would provide the means to escape from the maze if he agreed to marry her. Ariadne asked Da edalus to help her. Introduction: The process of hydraulic fracturing can be understood at different geographic scales such as the local, national and global. In order to better understand this process, the ways in which these scales influence hydraulic fracturing need to be deeply considered. The original purpose of hydraulic fracturing was to benefit the national and local economy plus environment of the United States, but due to the large interdependencies and networks of our world today, impacts at a global scale are inevitable. By analyzing each scale individually starting with national, local and ending with global, it will become clear that each scale is interdependent and interrelated with one another. Not only at a mosaic level does local and global connect, but also through a networking level where both local and global are made up of sets of connections and disconnections and can see local places as gaining their different characters through their distinctive patterns of association with other places (Crang, 2014, p. 18). For the specific case of hydraulic fracturing, it is more effective to view it through networks at the national, local, and global levels because a main factor of this resource is boosting the national economy of the United States by globally exporting the resource. The abilit y to export the good requires connections and networking between the different scales. Hydraulic Fracturing: Hydraulic Fracturing is a process of forcing high levels of pressurized water underground in order to crack the layer of the earth to release the shale from the gas reservoir. Social boldness and tough mindedness Timid people do not make good leaders as they dont attract a following. Leadership effectiveness For an organization to have effective leadership, the leader should communicate clearly within the organization (Jasper Jumaa, 2005). The employees within an organization should be motivated in all aspects including financial all otherwise. A leader should be a risk taker, visionary and goal oriented. If necessary, a good leader must be able to change the course of the team fast enough, so that the decisions are effective. Leadership theories Great man theory and participative theory Due to the broad content involved in leadership, various theories have been developed to support every leadership trait and behavior. The great man theory in leadership shows a leader who is idolized and is nearly worshiped by his subjects. The great man theory is the equivalent to tyrant or dictatorial leadership in an organization (Tracy, 2014). The second theory is the participative leadership theory. In this theory, the leader encourages group participation in decision making. This is an all-inclusive leadership style but may have certain limitation. Trait theory and behavioral theory Trait theory in leadership focuses more on the trait of a leader and the quality of the trait. Behavioral theory on leadership on the other hand focuses on the behavior of the leader. In these theories, various leadership styles emerge like the autocratic and the democratic styles of leadership (Winkler, 2010). Current and projected issues impacting on organizational leadership and success Due to current global changes, many factors affect organizational leadership, they include; Knowledge- many people have acquired knowledge that is crucial in organizational leadership. However, based on the strategies involved, the top down communication show many characteristics of a dictatorial or a tyrannical leadership model. The best and effective communication strategy for an organizational success and leadership is the bottom up strategy. This is where a two way communication strategy is involved. Any decision is made by employees but major decisions are made by the top management. Conclusion Leadership is crucial for survival and success of any organization.
